II. Market Analysis
As Egypt’s domestic situation has grown increasingly stable and its economy has resumed growth, automobiles have once again become a major consumer trend in the country. In 2014, China exported 53,100 vehicles to Egypt, a year-on-year increase of nearly 50%. That same year, Egypt’s car sales doubled compared with 2013.
Egypt is situated at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe, making it a major market with a population of 70 million. Its consumer base boasts significant potential, and currently, there is strong demand for affordable, entry-level cars and motorcycles. A substantial gap exists between domestic production and market demand; as Egypt’s macroeconomic conditions continue to improve and household incomes rise, this disparity is widening, creating opportunities for the entry of passenger vehicles. Whether in complete vehicles or automotive components, Egypt offers considerable market potential.
III. Overview of the Used Car Market
Annual imports of used cars in Egypt: approximately 200,000 vehicles, accounting for 67% of the country’s total annual car transactions (300,000 units), with a market size reaching RMB 83 billion and EGP 200 billion.
Vehicle age structure: Egypt currently has over 3 million vehicles that are more than 10 years old, and the demand for vehicle replacement remains persistent.
Vehicle sources: Primarily imported from Dubai, South Korea, and Europe, with China’s share steadily increasing (e.g., brands such as Chery and BYD).
Market segment characteristics:
Passenger vehicles: Primarily fuel‑efficient conventional cars; however, due to policy restrictions, only imported used new‑energy vehicles (hybrid or battery‑electric) and vehicles specially designed for persons with disabilities are permitted.
Commercial vehicles: Demand for trucks and construction machinery remains robust (driven by infrastructure investment), and imports of vehicles up to 10 years old are permitted.
