- III. Market Overview
According to the “Population Clock,” Malaysia’s population in 2024 neared 34 million. Indigenous peoples, including Malays, account for approximately 67.4%, followed by ethnic Chinese at 24.6%, Indians at 7.3%, and other minority groups at 0.7%. Per capita national income stands at US$10,600, placing Malaysia among upper-middle-income countries; the middle class comprises roughly three-quarters of the population. As a highly trade‑dependent developing economy, Malaysia relies heavily on imported food and ingredients. With steady GDP growth, its food and beverage market is becoming increasingly diversified, with supplies sourced both domestically and from abroad.
As a member of the ASEAN Free Trade Area, Malaysia implements the AFTA’s “Generalized System of Preferences” tariff regime. Under the ASEAN Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, it has established cooperative arrangements with China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and India. Serving as a gateway to the ASEAN market, Malaysia has successfully attracted substantial foreign investment since opening its economy to foreign capital in 1986. According to recently released statistics from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), by sector, the food industry grew by 8.7% (compared with 4.7% in 2011), while the beverage industry expanded by 8.4% (versus 3.0% in 2011).
Malaysia is the world’s largest exporter of halal food and is vigorously striving to become an international hub for halal products, making it the ideal springboard for entering the global halal market of 1.4 billion consumers. Currently, the halal certification issued by Malaysia’s Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) is recognized by 42 Muslim associations across 22 countries. In other words, obtaining Malaysian halal certification effectively serves as a passport to Muslim markets, facilitating expansion into the vast halal food sector.
The Malaysian government regards agriculture as the nation’s third economic growth engine. In 2015, it allocated RM6 billion to support agricultural development initiatives, significantly enhancing the sector’s competitiveness and commercial value. This policy also presents overseas partners with new business opportunities—investing in or forming joint ventures with local enterprises to tap into Malaysia’s agricultural market and food-processing industry.
Malaysia’s grocery retail sector is highly mature. According to data from the Malaysian Retailers Association, 60% of food products are purchased at traditional supermarkets and specialty stores. According to BMI Research, Malaysia’s food retail market was valued at USD 15 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 24 billion by 2024. Supermarkets and large-format stores are widespread across Malaysian cities, serving as the primary source of food for approximately 45% to 60% of urban consumers.
