Tanzania Travelogue

03-19

Beijing time, on the evening of August 18, the Shandong delegation assembled at Beijing Airport, a total of 8 people, departing from Beijing. They took flight EK307, and after more than ten hours of flying, the delegation successfully arrived in Tanzania at 4 PM local time on August 19.

Tanzania Immigration

Previously, some companies had tourist visas and were very concerned about potential fines due to visa issues. Therefore, we specifically arranged for companies to cross immigration in shifts, choosing more lenient customs windows. Unexpectedly, customs clearance was smooth, and the delegation did not encounter any difficulties. After clearing customs and successfully retrieving luggage, another security check was required at the exit. At this point, some companies' luggage was oversized, and staff requested to open the boxes for inspection. Only one box from the Shandong delegation, belonging to Huangming, was requested to be opened, and the matter was resolved by giving the staff a flashlight. Upon exiting the airport, a local guide was already waiting. We successfully found the Shandong delegation's guide and began loading luggage onto the vehicle. As some companies had not yet left the airport, local SIM cards could be purchased there, so some companies were randomly arranged to buy phone cards.

Around 6 PM local time, the companies successfully checked into the Holiday Inn hotel. Dinner started around 7 PM and was arranged at a local Chinese restaurant called Tianshui, mainly serving Sichuan cuisine. The taste was moderate and quite satisfactory. The hotel itself was clean and well-equipped, but it could not provide sufficient drinking water, and the tap water was not potable bond

On the morning of the 20th, the companies had breakfast at the hotel. The hotel breakfast was a buffet, mostly Western-style dishes with light flavors, so the companies highly praised the pickled vegetables provided. After breakfast, the companies went to the exhibition hall for setup. Each delegation held a brief mobilization meeting at the venue to discuss exhibition-related issues. Afterward, arrangements were made for the companies to dine inside the exhibition hall. In the afternoon, some companies completed their setup, and the guide arranged for part of the companies to visit and shop in the city.

On the morning of the 21st, the exhibition held its grand opening ceremony. On the day of the opening, Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Lu Youqing, Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Trade Development Bureau of the Ministry of Commerce Zhu Zhongxing, Tanzanian Minister of Industry and Trade Abdalla Kigoda, and key leaders from organizations such as the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, and the Tanzania-China Africa Chamber of Commerce attended the opening ceremony. After the ceremony, Deputy Director-General Zhu Zhongxing accompanied Ambassador Lu Youqing, Minister Kigoda, and other guests on a tour of the exhibition. Major Tanzanian media outlets were present at the exhibition site for interviews and reporting.
On the first day of the exhibition, there was a good number of merchants, and many visitors, making the exhibition site quite lively. Dinner was arranged at the Tangren Restaurant. Basically, every night was a different restaurant, mainly Tianshui, Tangren, and Changcheng. For detailed dishes, see the picture below:
The local beer is called Kilimanjaro; it has a high malt sugar content and a good taste, and is generally used for banquets. Local beef, lamb, and seafood are relatively cheap, but green vegetables are particularly expensive. The cheapest rice costs 20 yuan/jin, and cauliflower generally costs tens of yuan per jin.

Everything went smoothly during the exhibition. On the last day of the exhibition, after dismantling the booths ahead of schedule, the guide organized a group visit and shopping trip to the handicraft market, the seaside, and a supermarket.

Chinese cigarettes, Hongshuangxi, seen in the supermarket, surprising! There are also local brands like Camel and Portman. It's rare to see people smoking on the streets; those who smoke are generally Indian-Pakistanis and Chinese.
Besides taxis, another important mode of local transportation is this:

Safety

In Tanzania, Chinese people often encounter robberies, so it's crucial not to carry too much cash when going out alone, especially for single women.

The Sea of Tanzania

The sea in Dar es Salaam is beyond words; see the pictures directly:
Zanzibar Island
The most beautiful part of Zanzibar Island is Zanzibar, mainly referring to Zanzibar City. Zanzibar Island is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, embedded like a dazzling gem on the calm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Stepping onto Tanzanian soil, the sea breeze blows, and a humid, fishy smell fills the air. Seagulls are seen everywhere in the sky, constantly soaring and chirping... The local pace of life is not fast. At this moment, if you sit in a street-side cafe, watching the crowds come and go, the lazy pace of life is filled with contentment. There is none of the noise and bustle of Nigeria here. Even when encountering street vendors, they approach slowly and ask politely. If you don't need anything, they won't pester you, simply moving on to find the next buyer. The streets here are relatively orderly, with Chinese elements easily found alongside them. Skyscrapers stand tall, making it feel unlike a typical African city. The ubiquitous Indian-Pakistanis in the city add much exotic charm. This city, located on the west coast of the Indian Ocean, has beaches and a sea so beautiful it's intoxicating. The white sands and blue waters make you long to swim and dive.
Tanzania is a typical traditional agricultural country. The overall investment environment in Tanzania is relatively good, with many enterprises and business associations stationed there, and the overall urban development is mature and relatively standardized. The economic off-season and peak season are distinct. As a traditional agricultural country, purchasing power is limited, and economic pillars are largely controlled by Indian-Pakistanis. With the rise of urban construction in Tanzania, building materials enterprises are suitable for local development. Many Shandong building materials companies have offices there, and civil and commercial building materials products, as well as affordable Chinese-made products, are very popular. Tanzanians impress me as somewhat reserved, lacking the uninhibited and flexible nature of West Africans, yet possessing a unique composure.

Zhenghe Exhibition visited Nigerian automotive technology and other industry associations to promote cooperation on the 2025 Nigeria (Lagos) China Goods Expo.

From January 3rd to 6th, 2025, representatives of Zhenghe Exhibition's overseas staff successively visited the secretariat of the Nigerian Automotive Technicians Association (NATA), the Amalgamated Union of Automobile Motor Mechanics and Technicians of Nigeria (AUOMMATON), and the Motor Mechanics and Technicians Association of Nigeria (MOMTAN). This visit primarily focused on in-depth discussions and exchanges regarding cooperation for the 2025 Nigeria (Lagos) China Commodities Fair. During the meetings, representatives of Zhenghe Exhibition's overseas staff introduced the basic situation of the Nigeria (Lagos) China Commodities Fair to the heads of the business associations. The heads of the various business associations acknowledged the significant achievements made by the exhibition in recent years. During the discussions, the three industry association leaders provided detailed information about their respective associations. As leaders and promoters of associations related to the automotive industry in Nigeria, these three associations have a wide influence in Nigeria and even West Africa. Against the backdrop of continuously deepening and upgrading China-Africa cooperation, they expressed high expectations for actively promoting trade cooperation between Nigeria and China in the automotive industry. The heads of the associations also stated their willingness to work with Zhenghe International Exhibition to jointly promote the continuous development of the Nigeria (Lagos) China Commodities Fair, uniformly organize member units to participate in the exhibition, and conduct one-on-one matchmaking discussions with Chinese exhibitors. As Africa's second-largest economy and most populous country, Nigeria has a huge demand for automotive and auto parts products, largely relying on imports. In Nigeria, over 90% of Nigerians tend to choose 'tokunbo' (used cars), which makes the 'tokunbo' distribution business very profitable in Nigeria. With the Nigerian government relaxing age restrictions on imported used cars, the volume of used car imports will further increase. Consequently, the auto parts market, both upstream and downstream of Nigeria's used car industry chain, will also see more opportunities. After years of operation by Chinese automakers, Chinese cars have established considerable 'prestige' in Nigeria. At the same time, the scarcity of local car repair outlets and the high cost of spare parts in Nigeria also indicate immense potential for Chinese auto parts exports to the Nigerian market.
