The number of Chinese shops and restaurants in small South American countries is surprisingly large.
04-22
Suriname is a small country in South America, less than one-tenth the size of Brazil or Argentina. Despite its small land area, its population density is still very low. Historically, Suriname has imported immigrants from Asia, and agriculture is mainly operated by Lao people. In recent years, many Chinese people have come to Suriname, making the density of Chinese shops and restaurants here surprisingly high; there's a Chinese shop every three steps and a Chinese restaurant every five steps. The total number may even exceed the total number of Chinese shops and restaurants in Brazil and Argentina. A small portion of these shops and restaurants were opened by earlier immigrants, while most were opened by mainland immigrants in the last ten years. This is easy to distinguish; the names of shops run by earlier immigrants are not in Mandarin Pinyin, but in dialect Pinyin, while mainland immigrants use Mandarin Chinese Pinyin. I have also entered shops and communicated with some shop owners in Mandarin, but speaking Chinese here feels strange. Most shop owners lack a sense of security; some told me not to take the bus, saying that taxis are safer. Recent policies may have encouraged Chinese immigration, but I doubt its profitability. In this country, there are Chinese shops in every village, and Chinese shops and restaurants are densely packed in cities.
