CCTV News reported that, according to information from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the number of international passenger flights in 2023 has increased from less than 500 per week at the beginning of the year to over 4600 per week, a 9.6-fold increase. The number of countries with resumed flights has reached 89.2% of the pre-epidemic level. Passenger flights between China and Europe have recovered to over 60% of pre-epidemic levels, and direct flights between China and the US have increased to 63 per week. The recovery level of flights with countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative is 6.2 percentage points higher than the overall level of international flights, effectively promoting international personnel exchanges and serving the national diplomatic situation.
In 2024, China's domestic passenger transport will continue to grow steadily. The annual passenger volume is expected to reach 630 million, exceeding the 2019 level by 7.7 percentage points. The international passenger transport market will accelerate its recovery, with an estimated 6000 flights per week by the end of 2024, reaching approximately 80% of pre-epidemic levels.
Domestic passenger air travel volume surpasses pre-pandemic levels
In 2023, the scale of domestic passenger air travel has exceeded pre-pandemic levels, increasing by 1.5% compared to 2019, representing the fastest recovery among all modes of transportation.
