On November 14, the heads of state of China and Peru jointly attended the opening ceremony of the Chancay Port via video link. The official opening of the Chancay Port marks another solid step forward in the cooperation between China and Peru under the framework of jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative, providing new opportunities for maritime freight transport between South America and Asia.
Chancay Port is located approximately 80 kilometers north of Lima, the capital of Peru. It is backed by the South American continent and faces the Pacific Ocean, boasting the advantages of a natural deep-water harbor. This geographical location makes Chancay Port a crucial hub connecting South America and Asia. The first phase of the project, which began construction in 2021, includes four berths with a maximum water depth of 17.8 meters. In the initial stage, it is planned to operate two 14,000 TEU container ships per week. As the port expands, it will be able to accommodate large vessels with a capacity of up to 24,000 TEU. The first phase can handle 1 to 1.5 million standard containers and 6 million tons of bulk cargo, while the second phase will increase the throughput to 3.5 million standard containers. Currently, there are no other ports on the Pacific coast of South America that can accommodate vessels of this size, highlighting its significant scale. At the same time, Chancay Port is also the first smart port and green port invested in, constructed, and operated by Chinese companies in South America. In addition, a tunnel will be built to connect directly to the Pan-American Highway, linking and radiating to various countries in South America! It is expected that in the future, more than 130 million containers will be loaded and unloaded at Chancay Port annually. According to Peruvian calculations, this project will generate US$4.5 billion in annual revenue for the country, accounting for 1.8% of its GDP.
Peru is an important source of imports for China, including copper ore, fishmeal for feed, etc. In the first ten months, China imported 148.95 billion yuan and 14.47 billion yuan worth of metal ore and agricultural products from Peru, respectively, with year-on-year increases of 19.2% and 23.8%, accounting for 85.5% and 8.3% of China's total imports from Peru. Among them, the import volume of copper ore and fishmeal for feed was 5.892 million tons and 813,000 tons, respectively, accounting for 25.2% and 46.2% of China's total imports of the same type of products during the same period.
With the opening of the direct shipping route between Chancay and Shanghai, the one-way sea transport time between China and Peru will be shortened to 23 days, saving more than 20% of logistics costs. Both fruit and mineral trade will benefit from this. Goods from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, and other countries, radiating outwards from Peru, can also be transported from Chancay to China and Asia via the Pan-American Highway, enabling deeper integration of the South American economy with China and consolidating Peru's position as a gateway connecting land and sea, and linking Asia and Latin America. With the commissioning of Chancay Port, a new shipping route for China-Peru trade has been opened, ushering in a new era for Peru and surrounding South American countries.
