Nigerian President's visit to China boosts engineering machinery exports
03-15
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan arrived in Beijing as scheduled on July 9, beginning a 4-day state visit to China.
Cooperation between China and Nigeria in the field of infrastructure has a long history. Chinese companies have invested nearly US$8.3 billion in Nigeria and are participating in engineering construction projects worth US$28.1 billion, making Nigeria currently the country with the most overseas contracted engineering business for China. During this visit to China, infrastructure cooperation will be a major focus of Goodluck Jonathan's trip.
Previously, he had just attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project. This project, conceived in 1982, was ultimately invested and constructed by the China National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNEEC) and the China Hydropower Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd. (Sinohydro), established as a joint venture by the Nigerian government and the Export-Import Bank of China, with a budget exceeding US$1 billion. Additionally, in April this year, the Nigerian Federal Government approved 47.8 billion naira (approximately US$300 million) for the construction and rehabilitation of 13 roads. The Ministers of Finance, Transportation, Planning, and Investment, who are responsible for this project, accompanied the President on this visit.
Through contracted projects, domestic engineering and construction equipment, represented by construction machinery, has poured into Nigeria in recent years. It is understood that due to optimism about Nigeria's development potential, domestic construction machinery enterprises such as Sany, XCMG, Lishide, and Yutong Heavy Industries are making efforts to open up the local market.
Just this March, Yutong Heavy Industries exported 10 loaders in bulk to Nigeria; and Sany, after seven years of development in the local market, has now become a local industry leader in terms of both single-product sales volume and product variety.
It is believed that Goodluck Jonathan's visit to China will further deepen cooperation between China and Nigeria in various fields such as infrastructure and energy, and Chinese construction machinery enterprises are also expected to further open up the local market through bilateral infrastructure cooperation.
