Private Label Manufacturers Association and Private Label Introduction

Private Label Manufacturers Association (PLMA) Established in 1979, PLMA is the only non-profit organization in the private label market, with over 4,000 member units from more than 70 countries. It holds exhibitions, press conferences, seminars, and forums annually focusing on the private label market. Each year, the association jointly publishes the International Private Label Market Annual Report with ACNielsen, including statistics on the market share of over 7,000 products from 20 countries.

Private label (own brand) refers to a brand of goods produced by a retailer under its own brand name. Retailers collect, organize, and analyze information on consumer needs for certain goods, then set up their own production bases or select suitable manufacturers for processing and production. The retailer then registers the new product using its own trademark and sells it through its various sales outlets. Private labels are increasingly popular worldwide, especially in Europe and North America. ACNielsen surveyed 80 products in supermarkets in 36 countries, and 17% of them were private label products.

2019 data shows that private label market share exceeded 50% in Switzerland; over 40% in Spain, the UK, Germany, Portugal, and Belgium; and private labels penetrated all Nordic countries reaching 30% or more for the first time. Market share remained above 30% in France, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, and above 20% in Greece and Turkey. In North America, market share also exceeded 20%, and market share in other regions of the world is also increasing year by year. In Europe alone, sales of private label products reached €45 billion, and global sales reached €100 billion.

Americans are turning to store brands. Sales revenue across the three main sales channels for private label products—supermarkets, chain stores, and department stores—soared, setting new records. By the end of 2015, the sales increase of private labels reached US$3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%, more than double the increase of national brands. In large supermarket channels, 1 in 4 items sold, or US$1 in every US$5 spent, was a private label product. Private label products also maintained strong growth in chain drugstores.

In chain retail stores, including department stores and Walmart, the quantity share and value share reached 21% and 17.2% respectively, with total sales reaching a new record of US$115.3 billion. After three years of development, the annual sales increase of chain retail stores reached US$5 billion.

In the last 10 years, private labels have become the main growth engine in the drugstore chain channel. The market value of private labels increased by 0.3%, while national brands decreased by 0.1% during the same period. Sales in the drugstore chain channel reached a new high of US$8.3 billion. In the past three years, annual private label sales increases have reached US$200 million each year.

The trend of increasing private label sales continues. According to a recent 2015 McKinsey survey, 80% of consumers believe that the quality of private label products is equal to or even better than national brands, and nearly 30% said they would buy more private label products in the coming year. Now over 60% of shoppers are buying private label products, compared to 40% three years ago.
