Russian Market Introduction
Russia has become the largest destination for China's automobile exports and the world's largest importer of Chinese vehicles. In the first half of 2023, China's total vehicle export value to Russia increased by 543% compared to the same period in 2022, reaching 4.6 billion US dollars. According to estimates by the Russian Federal Customs Service, nearly 70% of imported cars in Russia in the first half of 2023 came from China, while this proportion was 10% in 2021. Data from Russian automotive market analysis agency Autostat shows that in the first five months of 2023, China supplied a total of 120,900 passenger cars to Russia, accounting for 70.5% of the total automobile exports to Russia during the same period. This figure increased by 86.7% compared to the same period last year, setting a new historical record. With the continuous deepening of economic and trade relations between China and Russia, the convenience and potential of China's automobile exports to Russia will be further enhanced.
As of January 1, 2023, 55.87 million vehicles were registered in the Russian Federation. More than 81% of these were passenger cars, totaling 45.39 million units. Second in rank are light commercial vehicles (LCV), accounting for nearly 8% of the Russian fleet (4.22 million units). Trucks rank third (3.72 million units, 7%). Next are motorcycles and motorized vehicles (2.13 million units, about 4%). The smallest segment is buses (0.41 million units), with a share of about 1%. Domestic brands account for nearly 34% of the passenger car fleet, with LADA ranking first. According to vehicle registration data from the Russian Federation State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, the country currently has a total of 13.27 million LADA brand cars. Other Russian brands account for 4.5% of passenger cars, equivalent to 1.87 million vehicles. The remaining 66% of the fleet consists mainly of foreign car brands, totaling 30.06 million units.
Among foreign brands, the leader is Japanese manufacturer Toyota (4.15 million units), whose share accounts for 9.1% of the entire Russian fleet. This is followed by two Korean brands: Hyundai (2.60 million units) and Kia (2.59 million units).
Auto Parts:
China's supply of automotive components to Russia has also increased, reaching 179.2 million US dollars (+11%). Today, due to the withdrawal of the European market, Chinese auto parts have greatly compensated for the shortage of body parts in the Russian market, with China's auto parts share in this category reaching 45%. The demand for Chinese parts in the Russian automotive body parts sector is very high. When purchasing new parts, 58% of consumers choose products from China.
Tires and Wheels:
According to RIA Novosti, as of the end of June 2023, China's tire exports to Russia increased to 156.3 million US dollars (a 15% increase compared to last year). Russia's largest tire suppliers include: China, Belarus, Japan, Thailand, North Korea, India, Turkey, Vietnam, the United States, and Spain. By value, the listed countries collectively account for 91.0% of Russia's tire import supply. At the same time, the largest share of all tire imports comes from China—by the end of 2022, accounting for 51.6% of all supplies. In the value structure of tire imports by product category, tires for construction, road, lifting, and mining machinery account for the largest share, at 35.9%, or 779.8 million US dollars in monetary terms. Tires for trucks, buses, and trolleybuses account for a decreasing share, reaching 29.8% of total import value by 2022 (646.6 million US dollars).
New Vehicles (Whole Cars):
In the first half of 2023, China's passenger car exports to Russia reached 4.6 billion US dollars, 6.4 times higher than the same period last year. According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs of China, in June this year, China's car exports to Russia reached 1.03 billion US dollars, the highest level since the beginning of the year. Customs data shows that from January to June, China exported 325,800 passenger cars to Russia, five times the volume from January to June 2022. Autostat, an automotive market analysis agency, reported that in June this year, China accounted for nearly 76% of Russia's new car imports.
Used Vehicles (Whole Cars):
According to data from Autostat and the electronic vehicle registration system, from January to May 2023, Russia imported 178,500 used cars. This is three times more than the same period in 2022. In July this year, total sales of Chinese used cars and SUVs reached 7,613 units, a 62% increase from 4,703 units last year. According to Automarketer, in the used car and SUV market structure, sales reached 153,236 units in July, a 37% year-on-year increase.
New Energy Vehicles:
According to RIA Novosti, in April 2023, China's exports to Russia increased by 153% year-on-year, with new energy vehicles accounting for 31% of passenger car exports. This indicates that Chinese automobiles not only have traditional advantages in the Russian market but also possess a first-mover advantage in new energy and intelligent features.
