III. Market Introduction
1. RCEP creates broad space for China-ASEAN cooperation
China and ASEAN are connected by mountains and rivers. Facing severe challenges from the pandemic and trade protectionism, the total import and export volume between China and ASEAN has surpassed that of the EU and the US, making ASEAN China's largest trading partner. The formally established RCEP will become the world's largest free trade area, significantly enhancing ASEAN's central position in the Asian economy. Thailand, as the center of ASEAN and a member state of RCEP, with its unique exotic charm, preferential investment policies, open trade policies, and complete global industrial chain, has attracted a large number of Chinese enterprises to "go south" to ASEAN and expand into Thailand. On November 19, 2022, General Secretary Xi Jinping and Thai Prime Minister Prayut jointly witnessed the signing of the "Joint Action Plan on China-Thailand Strategic Cooperation (2022-2026)" and the "Cooperation Plan between China and Thailand on Jointly Promoting the Belt and Road Initiative," which greatly boosted trade and investment between the two countries. According to statistics, the total trade volume between China and Thailand reached 104.964 billion US dollars in 2023, with Thailand's exports to China amounting to 34.164 billion US dollars and imports from China amounting to 70.8 billion US dollars, expanding the China-Thailand trade deficit to 36.635 billion US dollars. Among them, goods imported by Thailand from China include motors and parts at 8.759 billion US dollars, chemicals at 6.026 billion US dollars, home appliances at 5.807 billion US dollars, and iron and steel products at 3.785 billion US dollars. From January to August 2024, the total trade volume between China and Thailand reached 88.842 billion US dollars, with Thailand's exports at 31.805 billion US dollars and imports at 55.036 billion US dollars, resulting in a trade deficit of 23.231 billion US dollars for Thailand.
2. Thailand's e-commerce market has developed rapidly in recent years
As Southeast Asia's second-largest e-commerce market, Thailand has attracted numerous cross-border e-commerce businesses. Government policy support, high internet penetration, and a favorable business environment provide advantageous conditions for the development of cross-border e-commerce in Thailand. Data shows that Thailand's online retail market, encompassing B2C and C2C, is projected to reach 4 trillion Thai Baht by 2025, with an average growth rate of 75% from 2022 to 2025. Social commerce plays a significant role in Thailand's e-commerce market, contributing approximately one-third of the total transaction volume. Over 73% of Thailand's population uses social platforms such as Line, Facebook, and Instagram, with TikTok, in particular, having over 40 million users, making it a "main force" in Southeast Asia. Livestream commerce has become a new trend in e-commerce, offering new sales channels for sellers.
3. SMEs are the main force in e-commerce
E-commerce platforms provide diversified support to Thai small and medium-sized businesses, covering content, resources, and marketing channels. While promoting the development of cross-border e-commerce and the express delivery industry in Thailand and driving employment in related industries, they also accelerate the circulation of goods, boosting Thailand's cross-border trade growth. Data from the Thai Ministry of Commerce shows that SMEs account for as much as 99% of the total number of enterprises nationwide, helping to create over 13 million jobs, accounting for 70% of total employment in Thailand, making them a crucial factor for Thailand's continued growth and development.
In summary, the Thai e-commerce market exhibits tremendous potential and vitality, and is expected to maintain rapid growth in the future.
IV. Past Events Review
The predecessor of the Thailand Cross-border E-commerce Product Selection Expo was the ASEAN (Bangkok) China Import and Export Commodities Fair (ACIEC), which has been held for 9 consecutive editions in Bangkok, Thailand. In recent years, with the rapid development of e-commerce applications, cross-border e-commerce has become a fast channel for enterprises worldwide to expand into overseas markets. The ASEAN (Bangkok) China Import and Export Commodities Fair has gracefully transformed into the Thailand Cross-border E-commerce Product Selection Expo, held concurrently with the Thailand SME Expo, making it Thailand's first exhibition focused on cross-border e-commerce.
The 2025 Thailand Cross-border E-commerce Product Selection Expo will be divided into three major exhibition areas: "E-commerce Hot Products," "Local Brands," and "Industry Boutiques." Based on internationalization, professionalization, market-orientation, and refinement, the exhibition is expected to cover over 15,000 square meters, attract 10,000 professional buyers, and feature 400 exhibiting companies, providing a more professional and practical platform for economic and trade cooperation for exhibitors. Concurrently with the exhibition, planned activities include the "China-Thailand Cross-border E-commerce Bangkok Forum," "SHOPEE Product Selection Special Session and Platform Onboarding Process," "LAZADA Product Selection Special Session and Official Investment Promotion Conference," "China-Thailand SME One-on-One Trade Matching Meeting," "China-Thailand E-commerce Conference," and other events.
