China has been South Korea's largest trading partner for 20 consecutive years. From January to September 2024, the bilateral trade volume of goods between China and South Korea was 240.043 billion US dollars, an increase of 9.695 billion US dollars compared to the same period last year, a year-on-year growth of 4.5%. According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs, in the first 11 months of 2024, the total trade value between China and South Korea was 2.11 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.3%.
China is a major importer of food to South Korea, with products such as fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen fruits and vegetables, vermicelli and noodles, freeze-dried fruits and vegetables, pickles, fermented vegetables, food additives, seasonings, aquatic products, meat products, and alcoholic beverages being highly welcomed by Korean buyers. At the same time, due to South Korea's fast-paced modern consumption trends, an increasing number of Korean consumers have a huge demand for convenient, healthy, instant, meal replacement, and frozen foods. The market for these types of products is rapidly expanding in South Korea, with startups and large food and beverage companies fiercely competing in this growing market.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of Korea also pointed out that Korea will focus on developing five major food industries: customized, functional, ready-to-eat, eco-friendly, and export-oriented products.
