Private Label (OEM) Introduction

The Private Label Manufacturers Association (PLMA), established in 1979, is the only non-profit organization in the private label market, with more than 4000 member units from more than 70 countries. It holds exhibitions, press conferences, and seminars on the private label market every year. To assist members in market development, in addition to this exhibition in Amsterdam in May each year, a similar exhibition will also be held in Chicago, USA in November. PLMA members can access the association's research data on the private label market at any time. Each year, the association jointly publishes an annual report on the international private label market with "ACNielsen", including statistics on the market share of more than 7000 products from 20 countries.

Private label (OEM) refers to a brand of goods where a retail enterprise collects, sorts, and analyzes information on consumer demand characteristics for certain goods, then establishes its own production base or selects suitable production enterprises for processing and production, and finally registers the new product using its own trademark and sells it at the enterprise's various sales outlets.

Private label products originated in Western developed countries and are now becoming increasingly popular worldwide, especially in Europe and North America. "ACNielsen" surveyed 80 products in supermarkets in 36 countries, of which 17% were private label products. In Spain, the UK, Germany, and Belgium, the market share of private label products has exceeded 40%, exceeding 30% in France, and 20% in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. In North America, it also exceeds 20%. The market share of private label products in other regions of the world is also increasing year by year. Data shows that in Europe alone, the sales of private label products reached 45 billion euros, and global sales reached 100 billion euros.

In 2017, the market share in the UK remained above 45% and showed a growth trend. In France, the popularity of private labels has exceeded 30% for thirteen consecutive years. In the Nordic countries, Belgium and the Netherlands reached new highs in market share. All Nordic countries—Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—increased.
