Private Label Manufacturers Association and Private Label Introduction
Established in 1979, the Private Label Manufacturers Association (PLMA) is the only non-profit organization in the private label market, with over 3200 member units from more than 70 countries. It holds exhibitions, press conferences, seminars, and forums on the private label market every year. Each year, the association jointly publishes the International Private Label Market Annual Report with ACNielsen, containing statistics on the market share of over 3700 products from 18 countries.
Private label (own brand) refers to a brand of goods that a retail enterprise produces itself or commissions a manufacturer to produce, using its own trademark, after collecting, organizing, and analyzing information on consumer demand characteristics for certain goods. These goods are then sold through the enterprise's various sales outlets.
Private label products originated in developed Western countries and are now becoming increasingly popular worldwide, especially in Europe and North America. ACNielsen surveyed 80 products in supermarkets in 36 countries, of which 17% were private label products. In the UK, Germany, and Belgium, the market share of private label products has exceeded 40%, exceeding 30% in France and Spain, 20% in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland, 18% in Central and Eastern Europe, and over 20% in North America. The market share of private label products in other regions of the world is also increasing year by year. Data shows that in Europe alone, the sales of private label products reached 45 billion euros, and global sales reached 100 billion euros.
Market Analysis
Americans are turning to store brands. Consumers are buying more private label products through various channels than ever before. Nielsen points out that since last summer, sales of private label products in major supermarkets, drugstore chains, and department stores have increased by 12%. Annual sales reached $80 billion, accounting for 22% of the market.
The trend of increasing private label sales continues. According to a new Roper survey, over 60% of shoppers are now buying private label products, compared to 40% three years ago. 80% of consumers believe that the quality of private label products is equal to or even better than that of national brands, and nearly 20% said they will buy more private label products next year.
