Founded in 1980, The Big 5 Show in Dubai is the most influential and largest exhibition for construction, building materials, and services in the Middle East. Its spin-off event, The Big 5 PMV (Plant, Machinery, Vehicles), is a specialized exhibition focusing on construction equipment, machinery, tools, and vehicles in the Middle East. During the 4-day exhibition in 2018, the show once again broke its scale record, with the net exhibition area growing by 12% compared to the same period in 2017, reaching 55,710 square meters. It also remarkably attracted 96,537 participants from 150 countries worldwide, a 23.4% increase from the same period in 2017. 2,822 exhibitors from 57 countries (including 28 national pavilions) (2,471 in 2014) showcased the latest technologies and products in the construction field, with 800 Chinese enterprises exhibiting over 6,000 square meters. Concurrently, the Middle East Concrete & Heavy Machinery Show in 2018 also saw a 13.5% growth compared to the same period in 2017.

The report points out that the civil construction market has become the largest component of engineering projects in GCC countries, mainly due to the continuous economic and population growth in countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. These countries have invested hundreds of billions of dollars in infrastructure construction and upgrades. In terms of the scale of ongoing projects, Saudi Arabia leads with US$81 billion, followed by the UAE with US$6.6 billion and Qatar with US$3.2 billion. The report also predicts that the bidding value for civil construction projects in GCC countries is expected to reach US$99 billion by 2020. Due to factors such as Dubai securing the right to host Expo 2020, the gap in market size between the UAE and Saudi Arabia is expected to narrow.
