Market Introduction Overview of the U.S. private label market: Market Growth: Private label brands show strong growth in the U.S. market. In 2023, total sales of store brands rose to $236.3 billion, an increase of $10.1 billion over the previous year, setting another record. Private label sales increased by 6%, and volume increased by 0.9%. Consumer Buying Motives: Nearly half (43%) of consumers buy private label products to save money, 58% believe private labels offer good value, but less than a third (29%) believe private labels are comparable in quality to name brands. Consumer Trends: Almost every American household purchased private label goods in the past year. All American households purchased private label groceries, followed by health and beauty, home goods, and home and garden. Product Category Performance: In the 10 food and non-food categories tracked by PLMA, store brand sales increased in 2023 in all categories except tobacco (down 16%). The fastest-growing categories were beauty (+10.5%), general food (+10%), beverages (+8.9%), and household care (+8.7%). This was followed by frozen (+4.4%), general merchandise (+4%), health (+2.4%), refrigerated (+1.8%), and alcohol (+1%). Retailer Dependence: Among the top 20 retailers in the U.S., Aldi and Trader Joe’s are most reliant on private label products, accounting for 80% and 69% of their total sales, respectively. Walmart has five brands with over 50% penetration among American households, including Great Value, Equate, Mainstays, Marketside, and Freshness Guaranteed. Kroger’s “Smart Way” brand, launched at the end of 2022, was the fastest-growing private label in the past year, with sales increasing by 135%. IV. Review of Previous Sessions Exhibits included two major categories: food and non-food. In 2024, 1820 exhibitors from 63 countries participated, with 2985 booths, including 1362 food companies and 458 non-food companies. Nearly 7000 professional buyers also attended. Buyers included chain stores, supermarkets, shopping malls, discount stores, drugstores, hypermarkets, convenience stores, importers, wholesalers, and military buyers from around the world. Thousands of product categories were sourced, mainly focusing on food, beverages and snacks, health and beauty, over-the-counter drugs, household paper and cleaning products, household goods, and daily necessities. III. Market Introduction In 2023, the total trade volume between China and Russia exceeded US$240 billion, setting a historical high.
